What type of RFID readers one should use?

New applications for RFID technology are constantly emerging to solve an age old problems across industries. In the retail industry, every store has inventory which may range into the thousands, even hundreds of thousands of pieces and dollars. Jewelry stores have millions of dollars invested in thousands of earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. With RFID jewelry tags, accurately tracking inventory becomes a viable option.
Placing a tag on every piece of jewelry is a constant in every jewelry tracking application, but the method of reading the tags will change depending on the setup. You can go with a handheld reader or a fixed reader with shelf antennas under the jewelry.
Handheld RFID Readers: If you have all your inventory on the showroom floor, perform a quick sweep of the inventory by waving the handheld reader from side to side capturing all the tags. To get an accurate inventory check, bring the handheld reader within a few inches of each tag. You need a base count of inventory for your baseline number, but this is a pretty fast and easy method to track your jewelry.
Fixed RFID Readers: If you need a constant inventory check, you can setup a fixed reader and shelf antennas. Once you have the shelf antenna installed, the tagged jewelry would be placed on top. When a piece of jewelry is removed, the reader immediately detects the change and removes the jewelry from the inventory count. This is a real-time method of tracking your jewelry inventory. If you are simply showing jewelry and take a piece off the shelf antenna, the system will detect the removal, but will add the item back into inventory as soon as the piece is returned to its original position.

I received a lot of positive feedback about my column RFID Goes Into the Shark Tank. I'm glad people enjoyed it. When I first wrote it, I was concerned that someRFID solution providers might feel I was poking fun at them, but nothing could be further from the truth. I have a lot of respect for the folks who produce RFID solutions. But most are struggling to sell their solutions, and I wanted to illustrate a big reason why.
Many of the problems come down to an obsession with the technology. More specifically, vendors are in love with their products. I get that. I am very proud of RFID Journal's products. But putting too much focus on the products and their features makes it harder to sell them.
Here are a few of the mistakes I see solution providers making regularly.
1. Not providing a budget for marketing new products. Many RFIDcompanies invest heavily in producing some very impressive new products. In most cases, they do not allocate any budget for a product launch. This is true of established companies as well as startups. In his new book "Escape Velocity," Geoffrey Moore advocates having a marketing budget equal to the product-development budget—so, for instance, if you spend $400,000 to create a new product, then you should spend the same amount to advertise it.
2. Not inventing what the market wants. There are certainly many new products launched each year that were developed because an end-user company needed a tag or reader that didn't exist. But some RFID companies develop products because they can, and not because the market is asking for them. I often ask firms who their product is aimed at, and typically get the answer "anyone who needs it." I've also talked to businesses that have said they had a solution for an industry that doesn't seem to be looking for one (perhaps because the problem isn't serious enough).
3. Inventing what only one company needs. As a corollary to number two, some firms invent a solution that only a single company requires. They find a customer that wants anitem-level tag for tracking, say, eyes of newt, and they create it. Then they get some short-term revenue out of it, but can't sell the tag to anyone else.
4. Promoting product features instead of the problems they solve. If you look at most materials produced by RFID companies, they usually focus on the "speeds and feeds" of their product—how fast their reader can interrogate tags, their tags' read range or the number of reports in their software. End users are interested in solutions to their particular problems, and only want to discuss the specifications of a certain product after they are convinced it might solve them.
5. Not partnering with other companies to create a complete solution. Most RFID firms sell tags, readers or software. Some make none of those things, but provide systems-integration services. This means that a company with a problem RFID can solve often has to engage two, three and sometimes four other firms to create a solution. That increases the risk involved and turns a lot of potential customers off. If RFID businesses focused on the problems that potential customers face, they might band together to create exciting and market-changing solutions.
Ralph Waldo Emerson reportedly said that if a man could make a better mousetrap, the world would beat a path to his door. That might have been true in Emerson's day, but today, there are so many companies claiming to have a better mousetrap that those with rodent problems have become cynical. They don't believe any claims. And they certainly don't care if your trap flies shut 20 percent faster than the nearest competitor. They want the cheapest, most effective solution to their problem. Period.

A short story. RFID technology and challenges.

RFID - Radio Frequency Identification.

The technology world has noticed tremendous growth in RFID business in last few years. The technology is not new but benefits in the commercial world is noticed now. The technology was first used during world war. Till date the advancement in Integrated chip designs and memory modules have minimized the tag size and increased the reading range. For most of the applications the standardization is not easy to achieve. This is because the devices and tags must be selected as per the environment, current software application and future plans of any organisation. This will keep high demand of RFID professionals in the market.

The RFID technology is widely used in security and safety applications. In such cases to outsource hardware from out side may be trouble-sum some times. This is always pointed out while any technology implementation is being discussed.I believe each government must have control on facility that is producing RFID products which are to be used by government or military purpose. In this global and privatization scenario such points are referred as  conservative approach but one must think logically. There is nothing that comes first then safety and security of the country. 

The other important point is RFID products must be tested by any company before launching in any country. The environment does effect the efficiency and life of the tags and readers. We all know the environment of India where we have three seasons and one is rainy. The RFID tag working is effected by the water and if this is not considered the project may fail. 

That's my opinion hope some government department read this and recruit me for research and development. Dreaming of research and Development.

My online identity

Online Identity:
Who am I? Even I can not answer this question but yes today we have a tool that will give results to answer this queries? Guess the tool!!! Yes online identity. Due to heavy influence of social media and web services we can know about the person. The virtual world or online identity may be fake or may not be authentic but it does help us in knowing the person. Still many people are not using web to show up their identity but in such cases also we can know the mind set of the people as the person wants to hide from the online world.

Mainly we live with two identities one is offline and the second is online. Offline identity is our real life identity while online identity is who you are when you are in cyberspace. As started in this topic let us check what is available online about my self. One can check this by google search, youtube search etc by searching on my name, my village , my company name etc. From many years I tried to get my online identity perfect so today I am getting perfect information about myself. Try with searching my name "harnish naik" on google. Check yourself and guess about my self.

Now you must be asking why I have selected this topic. In today's world if you go for any job or admission the companies higher third party agencies who provides report about persons information and behavior. This third party agencies conduct online research of potential candidates. So start working on improving your online identity before you apply for any job or for any new position or activity.

My work on RFID Technolgy.

I am Glad that my conclusion in my Ph.D thesis are facts now. 

In thesis I have stated following points

Point-->The characteristics of jewelry items fulfill all requirements of RFID technology implementation. Major issue with RFID implementation is its high tag cost. Jewelry items are expensive and make it possible for cost effective RFID implementation. The main factor retailer or solution provider should keep in mind while implementation of RFID in jewelry is of selection of proper RFID tag. Major issue for jewelers is taking physical stock and theft. This issue could be solved by implementing proper RFID based solution.  Many RFID solution providers have developed RFID based jewelry management solution.  Main use full activity retailer see from RFID technology is of stock taking. Retailers were spending more, more manpower is required, and it is time taking process. Retailers see RFID as a magic and not an actual technology that will change the retail process and activities.

Speed up your web site.

Most of the tips are the ones that you probably know. So, you can use the list as a checklist (which it normally is in my "customer notes sheet" : ) ).
Here are the tips:

1. Get A Fast & Less-Loaded Web Server

This is a must. Whatever you do to make your website faster, if it is served slow, there's nothing to do.
Make sure that the server your website is hosted has low ping values & it is not over-loaded. Specially if you've a database and/or using dynamic files (like asp, asp.net, php, ruby..) server over-load can kill the performance.
If you've a simple website with few visitors then shared hosting is ok. For a website getting popular, think of a VPS with guaranteed RAM & CPU usage. If the website is already popular, a dedicated server will be the best performing one.

2. Know When To Use GIF, JPG & PNG Files. 

Playing with the quality of images will dramatically lower the sizes of them while they will still be looking good.
GIF is suitable for images with few colors like logos, text & line art. When saving a GIF file, make sure you use a small color pallette (learn more).
JPG is good for images with lots of colors & details like photographs. Decrease the quality of a JPG image before saving. It will still look good for a web image (learn more).
PNG, a format specially for websites, has great quality – both transparent & non-transparent – is specially functional when you're in need of quality transparent images. Don't forget that IE6 has problems in displaying them (learn more).

3. Use XHTML – No Tables

This is easy to tell but may be harder to implement for anyone that has few experience with XHTML.
The thing is, tables are rendered slower than DIVs by browsers. You can do more with less code & no need to say it is much better to be compatible with any browser (including mobile browsers), in means of SEO, etc..
Update: There may be cases when using tables are much more logical like "tabular data". You may have to code a lot for creating the look of a simple 5 columned table. Don't do that & use tables when needed.
What is tried to be mentioned here is, use XHTML rather than tables in general. But don't try to draw images with XHTML.

4. Use CSS Smartly & Compressed

  • Mention every style in CSS files.
  • Find the common properties in objects, define them once & try not to repeat them.
  • If using a significant amount of totally different properties for a specific page, define them in another CSS file & only include on that page. So users viewing other pages won't need to download those properties.
  • Compress your CSS file (you may try thisthis or this).

5. Merge & Compress JavaScript Files

Try merging JavaScript files prevent multiple includes (see step 6).
If a JavaScript file will be used only in few pages, try to include them inside those pages only (like CSS in step 4).
Compress JavaScript files. It lowers the size seriously & doesn't have any bad effects on your side. This & this are some of the popular compressors.

6. Manage Included Files Better

There may be several files included in webpages like CSS files, JavaScript files and other JavaScript files for statistic services, social bookmarking sites, widgets & more.
Try to decrease the number of these files:
  • If using digg-reddit-like voting widgets, don't use them in stories that won't hit the frontpage & remove the ones that were submitted few days ago as they won't have any help after sometime.
  • Use only 1 statistic service if possible. Every web-based service requires new files to be installed & they are called each time a page is loaded.
  • Host files on your side & don't use web addresses as file paths.
    • If you're using any JS frameworks like jQuery or MooTools, don't call the .js files from their websites but download & upload them to your website.
    • Don't try to call any file from a web address like "http://.." as this always requires dns queries to be done & will work slower.
  • PHP Speedy (WRD post)is a very effective solution that does all the combining & compressing automatically. You may want to try it.

7. Use HTTP Compression

HTTP compression is one of the most effective step with a little effort.
Today, almost every browser & web server supports HTTP compression. Using it, your files are sent to the visitor compressed & un-compressed on their side & you can have up to 90% success for the text based files (like HTML).

8. Better Coding

This is for websites which does not use any ready-to-use systems like WordPress, Drupal, ExpressionEngine or similar (if you're using these then you're lucky as they are already well-coded).
Besides the better XHTML & CSS coding, the dynamic coding of the website directly effects the performance.
As you can guess, this is a huge subject. But there are some major things like:
  • Seperate the static & dynamic content. This will help writing less-code.
  • Create smart & effective functionsFor ex: if you're going to use a user's name & birthdate at the same page, don't run 2 queries or functions, your function must call 2 of them. Simply, try to do everything once.
  • Connect to the database as few as you can & once connected, call only the data you need.
  • Try to keep database sizes small. If you've a large database, sometimes seperating it into several databases perform better, specially for the data which is reached not so often. From the server's point of view: 4-250mbs of dbs perform better than 1-1gb of db.

9. Cache Webpages

Caching is a superb way of decreasing the stress on the server by running more static files & less queries. It simply saves a static, HTML version of the page to be displayed & displays that file rather than the dynamic one.
For CMS applications like WordPress, there are already ready-to-use caching plugins (like WP-Cache). For PHP, here is a great article from SitePoint.
A small note, caching can also be done at the web server level. But if you're on a shared hosting account, you better be lucky to have it on.

How Can We Minimize the Failure Rate of RFID?

What factors lead to such failure, and how can they be minimized

It depends on what you mean by "failure rate." That phrase could refer to the percentage of time that RFID readers fail to capture data from a tag, or the percentage of applications that fail to deliver business benefits. Each type of failure is different, and the explanation of how to reduce the failure rate is complex.
I will focus my answer on the inability to capture tag data. There are many potential reasons that this could occur, which might differ depending on the type of RFID system you deploy. With an active system, failure to read tags is rarely an issue since the tags broadcast their own signal. Evidence of this reliability can be found in toll-collection systems, such as E-ZPass (see RFID News Roundup: E-ZPass Celebrates 20th Anniversary). No transportation agency would use active RFID for automated toll collection if the technology could only read tags 90 percent—or even 99 percent—of the time. These systems need to be nearly perfect, which they are.
Failure to read tags is a passive RFID issue, and often a passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) issue, since high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) solutions have a shorter read range and utilize a different means of tag-reader communication. Listed below are some common issues that prevent tags from being read consistently.
Incorrect tag orientation: Some tags are designed to be read regardless of orientation, and some reader antennas (those that are circular-polarized) are built to read tags in any orientation. But if you are using a dipole UHF tag and a linear-polarized antenna, for example, and if a tag is improperly oriented, it will not capture sufficient energy from the reader.
Electromagnetic interference: "Noise," or electromagnetic interference from other RF devices, as well as factory machines or fluorescent lights, can either block waves from getting to the tag (if they are employing the same frequency) or corrupt transmission.
Absorption of RF energy: Materials that contain a large amount of water absorb RF energy at the frequency used by passive UHF RFID systems. The energy absorbed is unavailable for use by the tag, which will fail to receive enough energy to reflect back a strong signal to an interrogator. In addition to water, other dense materials can prevent RF energy from reaching the tag as well.
Reflection of RF energy: Metal can reflect energy away from a tag, or reflect the tag's signal away from a reader antenna, thereby preventing normal tag-to-reader communication. If energy bounces off a floor, a ceiling, metal shelving or other materials, it can cancel out waves and cause null spots in the read field. Tags located within any such dead zones will not be read.
Detuning the tag antenna: Antennas on a UHF RFID tag have been tuned to receive signals within the UHF spectrum. If a tag is placed on or very close to metal, its antenna will become detuned and it will no longer receive a signal. This is similar to touching a radio antenna with a piece of metal—the channel being clearly received suddenly becomes static since the radio can no longer receive the signal.
Shadowing: If tags are lined up one behind another, the first tag captures the reader's energy, but the tags behind it do not. This effect is sometimes called shadowing.
All of these issues can usually be overcome with good system design.

Taking Credit Card Payments Online: What’s Involved?


If you’re looking to integrate a credit card payment solution onto your website, the following steps are a guide to applying for, enabling and taking payments online. At first glance, the prospect of integrating a payment solution on a website can seem unwieldy, what with the vast array of payment options and technical acronyms. This article breaks down the entire process into bite-sized pieces, helping you understand the process much better.

Apply For An IMA

When taking any kind of credit card payments connected to a bank account, you must apply for a merchant account with a bank. If the payments will be taken online, you’ll specifically need an Internet Merchant Account (IMA). In addition to banks, in many locations there are dedicated merchant account providers you can use.
Even if you currently take “card-not-present” payments (such as for mail orders) or use in-store payment terminals (such as chip-and-pin), you still have to speak with your bank about taking payments via your website (ask your bank for an additional IMA ID).
As a broad overview, your bank acts as the “acquirer,” which confirms available funds, authorizes transactions and exchanges funds with the issuing bank of the credit card (e.g. Visa, MasterCard), i.e. the card holder’s bank. The funds are then transferred to your account (the merchant), minus the applicable fees. The issuing bank’s charges are called interchange fees, and your bank’s fees are the acquirer’s fees. As the merchant, you should be informed of any fees prior to signing the merchant services agreement with your bank and payment service provider (more about this further down).
Your acquiring bank will expect your website to operate within a strict set of rules in order for them to comply with their own security procedures and government legislation (more on that later, too). Some credit card providers have developed the technology to allow card holders to authenticate themselves online. MasterCard’s is called MasterCard SecureCode, and Visa’s is called Verified by Visa.
It’s worth noting that it is possible to process Internet payments manually, using your regular point of sale system. This isn’t recommended, though, partly due to security reasons, and partly because it can quickly become too much work to manually process payments taken through your website (do you really want to have to key in a thousand individual cards if you suddenly have a huge uptick in sales?). Also, some merchant agreements may specifically prohibit this type of payment processing. Even if you do decide to process payments manually, you’ll still need an Internet Merchant Account, because it’s where the transaction is initiated that counts, not where it’s eventually processed.

Select A PSP

In addition to an IMA, you will need to use the services of a payment service provider (PSP). Commonly, PSPs handle the pages on a website where customers submit their payment details. PSPs provide a “virtual” cashier, or point-of-sale terminal, that collects card details, screens for fraud and securely passes the details to your acquiring bank for processing. PSPs are sometimes referred to as payment gateways.
The PSPs offer various packages and rates to suit the requirements of different merchants. The main difference between packages comes down to whether you want to host the secure payment pages on the PSP’s servers or on your own server. Some PSPs also provide tailored solutions.
It’s worth noting that some PSPs also provide IMAs, and some acquiring banks provide PSP services.

Payment-Processing Companies

As is often the case, there are alternatives to the approach outlined above, especially if you want to avoid the challenge of technically implementing one of these solutions. One alternative is to use the services of a payment-processing company. This option eliminates the need to apply for an IMA and PSP separately. The application process of a payment processing service is usually a lot less stringent than that for an IMA, which results in a faster set-up, especially if you have little or no trading history.
The disadvantage is that your customers will be sent to the processing company’s website in order to make their payment. Also, settlement periods can take much longer (up to 60 days), and your overall cost may be slightly higher than if you had gone with an IMA and PSP.
Not all payment-processing companies operate like this, though. Some companies, including PayPal and Google Checkout, remit payment immediately in most cases, directly into your account. In other words, as soon as the payment is made by your customer, the money is deposited into your merchant account.

A Sample Checkout Process

Here’s a step-by-step example of a common credit card payment process for any website:

STEP 1: THE BASKET

Your customer has added a product to their basket and is ready to proceed to checkout. The basket page on your website should be SSL encrypted to bolster the customer’s confidence (but that’s for another article).

STEP 2: THE CHECKOUT

The customer proceeds to the next page of your website: the checkout page. You can have various options here: account log-in page, shipping options, etc. But for the purpose of this example, let’s assume the first stage of checkout is simply a page that requires the customer to submit some personal details, such as contact info and a billing and shipping address.
Once the required fields are submitted and validated, the details are first securely sent to your back-end database, then wrapped up and securely passed to your PSP’s website. The customer is also redirected to the PSP’s website.
Let’s pause for a second and look at what’s happening here. Your customer’s data should be encrypted when sent to the PSP, not stored in plain text. So, you make a function call to your PSP’s API, requesting the transfer of data. The API’s function will usually require a set of parameters that include the merchant’s ID, a unique order reference, the transaction’s total charge and currency, and all of the billing and shipping mentioned above.
The function will then either return an encrypted version of your data, ready to be posted to the PSP’s payment pages, or hold onto the data and return a secure key in receipt that verifies that particular set of data against the transaction. You would store this key along with the order details and then redirect the customer to the PSP’s payment pages.

STEP 3: PAYMENT

Your customer arrives on the PSP’s secure payment pages. Technically, keeping the customer on your website at this stage is possible (if the PSP has this option), but let’s keep this simple. If the PSP’s pages duplicate some of the fields on your own checkout page (like the billing and shipping address), then these fields can be pre-populated.
Once all of the card holder’s data has been submitted and payment has been made, your customer is seamlessly returned to your website.
OK, some stuff is also going on in the background here, too. First, the card holder’s details are authenticated by the PSP using a variety of security procedures. Next, the card holder’s total charge must be authorized and the funds allocated to the merchant. Technically, the merchant should not take payment directly, but rather take a deferred payment until the goods have actually shipped (see the regulations on distance selling below).
Your PSP would then send the status of the transaction’s outcome to your website, along with the unique order reference (to identify the order) and any other pertinent data, including security-related confirmations such as CV2 and postal code checks.
You should make sure that your e-commerce store follows the PCI complance guidelines for storing, accessing and managing sensitive credit card data. This Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of requirements designed to ensure that all companies that process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment.
It applies to all organizations or merchants, regardless of size or number of transactions, that accepts, transmits or stores any cardholder data. So, if any customer of that organization ever pays the merchant directly using a credit card or debit card, then the PCI DSS requirements apply. This server security standard is required by almost all major credit card providers, or you risk the potential for steep daily fines. STEP 4: ORDER CONFIRMATION

On returning to your website, the customer is presented with a confirmation page indicating whether the payment has been authorized or declined.
The PSP passes variable data (such as an order reference) back to your website, which you use to look up the order data on your database and present the appropriate content.

The Indian technology industry got its start running call centers and doing low-level IT work for western firms. Then, in the 2000s, it started taking on higher-level IT tasks, offering management consulting services, and performing sophisticated R&D. Now there is another transition happening, one far more significant: a transition to development of innovative technology products. Instead of providing IT services as the big outsourcing companies do, a new breed of startups is developing high-value products based on intellectual property. The Indian industry group NASSCOM estimates that in 2008, the country’s software product revenues totaled $1.64 billion. It forecasts that this will grow to $11 billion per year by 2015. 

I attended the NASSCOM Product Enclave in Bangalore, this week, and gave several talks to the 1000+ entrepreneurs in attendance. I was surprised at the changes that are powering the new transition: its tech workers are leaving high-paying jobs in IT services, and kids out of school are ignoring social taboos against failure and defying marriage customs to become entrepreneurs. A few Americans are also joining the fray, starting their ventures in India rather than in Silicon Valley. Though in China, returnees from the U.S. are fuelling the entrepreneurship boom, they aren’t as important in India. Sadly for my Indian friends in Silicon Valley who are looking to return home, returnees—formerly in high demand and treated like rock stars—are out of vogue and now treated like rocks. 

Why are highly paid workers in an industry that does lucrative contract work for multinationals jumping ship? It’s the same dynamic as you observe in the United States. Entrepreneurs start their companies when they are, on average, 39 years of age. They have 10 to 15 years of work experience and ideas for products that solve real customer problems; they get tired of working for jerk bosses; and they want to build wealth before they retire. So they defy their fear of failure and take the plunge into entrepreneurship. 

India’s outsourcing industry is about 20 years old and has hundreds of thousands of workers with 10 to 15 years of experience and ideas for innovative products. 
At the NASSCOM event, I met dozens of tech-service industry workers who had become entrepreneurs. A surprisingly high proportion weren’t developing products for their former customers, but were instead looking inward to solve India’s problems. The one who impressed me the most was K. Chandrasekhar, of Forus Health. 

Chandrasekhar learned that that the vast majority of the 12 million people in India who are blind could have maintained their sight if only their problems had been diagnosed and treated on time. The diagnostic equipment for a single hospital cost at least US$60,000—which put it out of the reach of most regional clinics—and required ophthalmologists to perform the diagnosis. Chandrasekhar and Forus cofounder Shyam Vasudev decided to leave their jobs as senior executives at NXP Semiconductor (an offshoot of Philips) to create an affordable, all-in-one intelligent pre-screening device that is non-invasive and can be used by minimally trained technicians in rural India. The device provides an indicative report in 10 minutes for five major eye-related problems, including diabetic retina. This frees the doctor up to treat patients rather than administer tests. The product costs less than $15,000, and Forus expects the price to drop to half that in volume production. 

Another impressive entrepreneur at the NASSCOM event was Vishal Gondhal. In youth entrepreneurship, Gondhal is the Bill Gates of India. He dropped out of college to start his first company when he was 16, and launched his big success—Indiagames—when he was 23. He sold part of his company for a multi-million dollar sum 2005. He now mentors young entrepreneurs and invest in startups via his fund called Sweat & Blood Venture Group. 

But college-dropout tech entrepreneurs like Gondhal are extremely rare in India. Most make the wise choice to complete their education before joining a startup. So far, the biggest inhibitor of youth entrepreneurship in India has been the social stigma associated with failure and the low social esteem bestowed on startups. In the arranged-marriage system—which is still the norm in India—a young male who joined a company such as Infosys or IBM would command the best marriage proposals, and those who took the startup path risked trading down. No longer. All of the young entrepreneurs I met said either that they had told their parents that they would find their own partners, or that their parents supported their decision. 

It also used to be that nearly all the graduates of India’s prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) would join investment banks or take senior positions in the outsourcing industry. Given the huge salaries these workers commanded, entrepreneurship was out of the question. Yet I met dozens of entrepreneurs who had left these institutions and were now risking it all on entrepreneurship. Two such are Pavan Thatha and Rakesh Thatha. 

After completing his MBA from IIT-Bombay and working in the outsourcing industry for four years, Pavan Thatha persuaded his brother Rakesh, an IIT-Madras graduate, to leave his job at Computer Associates India and start a security-software firm called Arrayshield. That was in May 2010. By October 2010, they had hired two more IITans who left new jobs at Oracle India and John Deere. The new recruits took 75% paycuts. The recruits received intense pressure from their family not to take the risk. Their parents couldn’t understand why they would leave prestigious, high-paying jobs to risk it all. But they were determined to be part of the journey of the brothers, who has set out to do something to make a difference and change the world. 

And it isn’t just the Indians who are seeing opportunity in India. 

Valerie Rozycki had always wanted to be an entrepreneur and was keenly interested in emerging markets while a student at Stanford University. She believed India’s growing economy would provide great opportunities for someone like her. She had an idea to build a mobile engagement platform based on dialing numbers or “missed calls” (most Americans are not familiar with the concept of “missed calls”, but in the developing world, they are a common way of sending a short message: “I’m on my way home”, “pick me up”, “I love you”, etc.). So, in February 2010 she started a company called ZipDial, in Bangalore. The company leverages “missed calls” in marketing campaigns—to log votes. 

Valerie clearly has many great opportunities in Silicon Valley. When I asked her what a (white) gal like her was doing in a place like Bangalore, she smiled and said, “when all of the action is in Bangalore, who needs Silicon Valley?” Editor’s note: Guest writer Vivek Wadhwa is an entrepreneur turned academic.
